About Oishinbo
Written by Tetsu Kariya and illustrated by Akira Hanasaki, Oishinbo began serialization in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits in October 1983. The manga entered an indefinite hiatus in May 2014 and spans 111 collected volumes, with more than 135 million copies in circulation.
The earlier television adaptation ran for 136 episodes between October 1988 and March 1992. Yoshio Takeuchi directed that series at Shin-Ei Animation. Two anime films and a live-action film followed.
Viz Media publishes the manga in English.
Studio Echo describes the story:
To mark its hundredth anniversary, the Tozai News sets out to assemble the Ultimate Menu: a meal that represents Japanese cuisine at its finest. The assignment lands with Shiro Yamaoka, a journalist whose lack of enthusiasm makes him an unlikely choice for such an ambitious project.
Behind his cynical attitude, however, Yamaoka has an exceptional palate and a deep understanding of food. As he searches for dishes worthy of the menu, the story explores the ingredients, techniques, and people that give a meal its character.
The new Oishinbo anime is scheduled to broadcast in 2027. A specific premiere date has not been announced.
