The film’s official synopsis introduces the mystery:
Tasked by the emperor with returning a concubine to her homeland five years after her death, Jinshi discovers that her remains are inexplicably preserved. He brings Maomao to Binan-shu, a southern province governed by the Bi clan, to investigate.
Their destination is a thriving city on the water, filled with unfamiliar herbs and medicines that capture Maomao’s attention. When a major incident unfolds during the concubine’s funeral, the pair find themselves caught in a mystery that reaches far beyond the journey they expected.
